The DE Sustainable Schools Policy has laid down criteria for the numbers of children deemed needed to make a school viable. These figures are 105 children in a rural primary school and 140 in a city area (Belfast and Derry/Londonderry). For post-primary schools the figures are 500 children year 8-12 and 100 young people in 6th form. Many of our Integrated schools are over-subscribed and some have chosen to meet parental demand for places by consolidating and expanding their provision by increasing their early years, primary or post-primary provision.
