Hazelwood Integrated Primary School promotes safe cycling programme
13/02/2009
Pupils from Hazelwood Integrated Primary School, in Newtownabbey, recently helped to promote the Department of Environment’s Cycling Proficiency Scheme.
This scheme, sponsored by the retail chain Centra, encourages schools to offer cycling training to Primary Six and Seven students so they can learn how to safely ride their bikes in the great outdoors.
Young pupils who successfully complete the programme and pass a test even receive a certificate and badge to mark their achievement.
Children at Hazelwood were lucky enough to receive a personal visit from Carol Wilkinson, DOE Road Safety Education Officer, and Centra Brand Manager Nicky Kelly, in support of the cycling scheme earlier this week.
Friendly DOE road safety mascot Skooter also came along to the school to promote the programme, which has been running since 2004, and met some of the students.
To get as many children involved as possible this year, the Department of Education plans to write to all primary schools in Northern Ireland stressing the benefits proper cycling training can bring to children.
