Education Minister Caitríona Ruane shows her support for Integrated Education Week
06/03/2009
Education Minister Caitríona Ruane paid a special visit to Millennium Integrated Primary School, in Saintfield, on Thursday morning to help the staff and students celebrate Integrated Education week.
All 60 Integrated schools across Northern Ireland have used Integrated Education Week to promote the official theme of “It’s a small world”, holding exciting events for everyone to enjoy.
Speaking at Millennium, which was founded in 2000 and now has well over 200 pupils, Ms Ruane said: “It is great to see the young people at Millennium Integrated Primary study and research the cultures that help them to understand other traditions and societies.
“We have a multi-lingual society and the young people were learning and developing their language skills which will increase their interest and success in languages throughout their education.
“With the development of new technology and new initiatives such as schools promoting Fair Trade, the world is indeed getting much smaller and more accessible. Boundaries in education are being dissolved and pupils can swap stories, practices and experiences with their counterparts across the globe.
“Integrated schools do have an important role to play in education in the north. As Minister I have a statutory duty to encourage and facilitate integrated education. In the North of Ireland, there are over 18,000 children and young people being educated in integrated schools.”
