This year’s kite themed Integrated Education Week was spectacularly celebrated across Northern Ireland in a variety of ways and in particular the poignant words of a Year 9 pupil were no exception. Drumragh Integrated College student Chloe McCarroll encapsulated the principals of Integrated Education with her kite themed poem, describing what it means to her to attend an integrated school;
When you walk into any classroom in Drumragh College you feel free.
Everyone can be themselves and I can just be me.
Freedom to explore and have your view.
No matter what colour or religion, you will be accepted as you.
A unique individual expected to fly.
Live life to the full and you will rise high.
New experiences each and every day.
Friends and teachers will help and support you on your way.
You will be guided upwards just like a kite,
A world of opportunities in your sight,
Drumragh will help you to take flight.
Chloe McCarroll – 9HL
Chloe’s words echo the thoughts spoken by NICIE Chief Executive Officer, Noreen Campbell, during IE Week; “Kites represent hope, they invite us to lift up our eyes, to look for a future free from fear and violence. They represent creativity and freedom and playfulness, characteristics we look for in our schools.”
As an annual event Integrated Education Week celebrates the ethos and successes of all integrated schools across while providing the opportunity for schools to draw upon what makes an integrated school different. Difference and diversity are positively encouraged as Integrated Education continues to contribute to the peace and reconciliation process in today.
