Background

Windmill Integrated Primary School is situated on the outskirts of Dungannon in a private residential area over looking the picturesque Black Lough.

It was founded by a group of parents in 1988 with 26 children in a dilapidated Church hall. Two years later it moved to its present site and was housed in mobile accommodation. Gradually the numbers built up until there are 231 children from Nursery age through to P7.  Please feel free to view our web page at www.adream.tv

Schools Facilities

In April 2006 the school moved  into its own permanent building which  includes a computer suite, a library  a patio area for staff and interactive whiteboards in every classroom

In conjunction with a local football club Dungannon United Youth, the school successfully applied for lottery funding of £320,000 to build a Sports Hall adjacent to the school. It has been  completed and it is enhancing  P.E. provision for Windmill and other schools in the local area. It is the venue for inter-school events and used for the training of teachers. It is also used for after school activities. From 4:30 pm Its used for soccer coaching and available for a wide range of sporting activities for community use.

The school playground is a very important part of the school. In order to prevent it from being monoplised by ball players, a local firm was approached to erect an outdoor synthetic gravel pitch which could be used in the evenings by the comunity

What's Happening

The simple answer is Lots! But one of the newest developments is in the field of European Studies. All children from P1-P7 learn French. The Nursery - P.3 children are learning about life in the three Countries we are twined with - , and .

We have employed two teaching assistants who works with the 20 children we have in our school from countries throughout Europe.

Recently P.5- P.7 children have been having cookery and art lessons off-site at the Integrated Colege Dungannon.

In order to foster a greater understanding of the freedom Integrated schools can offer, classes in Scottish Country Dancing, Celidh Dancing and Irish Sudies have just begun.

In March a very successful concert was held in the Integrated college with three other schools in Dungannon who are part of an extended schools cluster.

Activities

Children are involved in a wide variety of after-school clubs including "Gardening Irish dancing:Samba:Hockey and Drama etc.

In order to highlight the natural resources of the Black Lough opposite our school, pupils were recently made Guardians of the Black Lough and given the responsibility to look after it for future generations.

Achievements

The School also likes to take part in a range of charity work to increase the children’s understanding of the needs of others throughout the world. In the past these have included Barnardo´s, UNICEF, Save the Children and The Dogs for the Blind Association.

In 2006 the school was given a very favourable report after undergoing an ETI inspection.

During September 2008, Windmill celebrated its 20 year anniversary in style by holding a glittering gala dinner. Dungannon Council also provided the school with a commemorative flower bed as a way to mark the two decades it has spent successfully educating children.

The primary has now come a very long way since it first began teaching pupils in a dilapidated church in 1988.
