Exceptional Success for A-Level pupils at Sperrin Integrated College

Students and staff at Sperrin Integrated College are celebrating another excellent set of A Level results this academic year.

At A Level, overall 87% of all grades were A*-C with 75 % of the pupils achieving 3 A*-C. Many pupils have achieved the top A*/A in one or more subject areas.

In thirteen subject areas including, Art and Design, English, Moving Image Arts, Health and Social Care (Single and Double Award) Performing Arts, ICT, Polish, Irish, Sports Studies (Double and Single Award), Religious Education, Business Studies and Engineering were all awarded the top grades A*-C with 100% success rate. This exceptional achievement can be attributed to the excellent teaching at Sperrin College, pupil work ethic, supportive parents and the work with our Magherafelt Learning Partnership colleagues.


The outstanding achievement of A* distinction for all seven of our students in ICT and all pupils in Sports studies cohort is testament to the very high standard of teaching and learning within the College.

Amongst the top achieving pupils are Jonathan Irvine, achieving an A* in Business Studies and Double A*A* in Sports Studies. Jonathan has secured a place at the University of Ulster to read Business Studies with Marketing. Other top performers include, Eoin Mc Donald, achieving an A* in Sports Studies, A* in ICT and A in Business Studies. Owen has also secured a place at University to complete a degree in Accountancy. Another excellent set of results for Jamie Mc Donald, who has achieved 2 A* grades in Business Studies and Engineering and 1 B grade in Geography. Jamie will study Planning, Regeneration and Development at university this year.

Matthew Mc Teague, Head Boy of Sperrin College has achieved two A* grades in Mathematics and ICT and a B grade in English literature. Matthew, having been caught by the acting bug during his leading role in the recent school production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’, is off to study Drama at University. Head Girl, Grace Sinclair, achieving 2 B grades in Geography and Health and Social Care and a C grade in Mathematics has been awarded a place in Accountancy. Rhona Mc Coy who has achieved an A and two B grades is looking forward to taking up her university placement in Liverpool to study Nursing.

Oran Elliot achieved an A grade in Business Studies and two B grades in English and History. Oran is going to undertake an opportunity in FP McCann as an apprentice.

As in other years most of our pupils have secured a place at their chosen third level institution and will study a wide range of disciplines such as Accountancy, Business Studies, Nursing, Arts, Podiatry, Psychology and many other third level qualifications.

Mrs. Heron, Principal of Sperrin College, commented on the outstanding success of Sperrin pupils stating: ‘Once again I would like to congratulate the Year 14   pupils on achieving an excellent set of results at A level. This success is testament to the hard work they put into their studies and the maturity and committed approach they took to learning.’

She continued, ‘On behalf of the Senior Leadership team and all the staff we wish all of them continued success in the next phase of their lives and we hope that they truly live out the school ethos of ‘Pursing Excellence Together.’

Mrs. Heron commented on the exceptional support given to these young people by the school and their parents, stating, ‘It is very important to acknowledge the huge amount of support and expertise given to all our pupils from our dedicated staff, both teaching and non-teaching who inspire our pupils to fulfil their potential. In addition, the Principal also thanked the Parents and families for their support given to the pupils throughout their seven years at Sperrin College.
